The Department is responsible for shaping the development policy of the Wielkopolska Region in such a way as to ensure dynamic and consistent development of the entire Region. Its decisions are based on forecasts of the Region’s development directions. These, in turn, are prepared at the Department on the basis of an assessment of socio-economic phenomena, some of them in cooperation with research and analytical institutions. They also constitute an important source of information for other units of the Office. Research and expertise reports are published on the website of the Wielkopolska Regional Territorial Observatory network and in the WROP evaluation research tab.

The tasks of the Department include initiating, coordinating and conducting the process of development and implementation, including monitoring and evaluation of the Region’s development strategy. The Department actively participates in creating conditions for its implementation. The Wielkopolska Region Development Strategy is effective from 27 January 2020 until 2030. The Department is responsible for preparing annual reports on the state of the Region, which are part of the process of reporting on the implementation of Wielkopolska's development goals.

Since 2004, the Regional Policy Department has been responsible for the preparation and coordination of implementation of programmes which define the directions of cohesion policy interventions in Wielkopolska in a given financial perspective. The Department is responsible for managing the entire Wielkopolska Regional Program for 2014-2020 and the European Funds for the Wielkopolska Region in 2021-2027, in particular with respect to finance, monitoring, evaluation, control, technical aid, information, promotion and training.
